Overview
Mosaic Rail provided specialist signalling design and assurance support to Amey Consulting as part of the Midland Mainline Electrification (MMLE) programme — one of the UK’s most significant rail decarbonisation projects as part of Network Rail’s Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy.
Our team played a key role in ensuring signalling assets were immunised to facilitate overhead electrification of the Midland Mainline. Our work was key to ensuring signalling designs were compliant, buildable, and seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure, enabling safe and efficient delivery of electrification works for Key Output 1A (Kettering to Market Harborough) and Route Section 1 (Market Harborough to Wigston South Junction), which were combined into the ES5 Kettering to Wigston project along with Route Section 3 (Syston North Junction to Trent Sidings Jcn).
The Challenge
The Midland Mainline Electrification project required signalling design adaptations across a complex, live railway network — involving legacy interlocking systems, constrained access windows, evolving client requirements and a desire to achieve maximum infrastructure benefit in the most cost effective manner.
Amey Consulting needed flexible, experienced design support capable of delivering high-quality signalling solutions within tight deadlines across multiple workstreams while maintaining compliance with Network Rail standards and the project’s accelerated assurance processes.
As part of the Kettering to Wigston project, discreet sites at Cricklewood, Kilby Bridge, London Gateway and Corby were developed for the changeover of traction power between Diesel and Electric to allow for Bi-Mode rolling stock to undertake this action.
Our Approach
Mosaic Rail allocated experienced signalling engineers from our in house design teams to support Amey’s project delivery teams by providing targeted design support and technical oversight and delivery.
Collaboration was a key part of this programme of work to compliment the work Amey Consulting were also producing in house on other Route Sections of the electrification programme, therefore consistency of design across the design teams was paramount. Close cooperation between the teams achieved buildable designs which mitigated risk through early hazard identification, comprehensive integration and streamlined assurance with the Client teams.
Our collaborative approach focused on:
- Integrating with Amey Consulting’s in-house teams to ensure consistent quality and efficient workflow through the engineering management processes in place and delivery of comprehensive development and detailed design in a timely manner to allow the integrated programme of works to progress.

The Solution
Mosaic Rail delivered high-quality signalling design outputs supporting Amey’s delivery of Midland Mainline Route Sections 1 and 3, including the combined Kettering to Wigston project.
Our contribution included:
- Production of supporting technical documentation for design approval and assurance.
BIM / ProjectWise input to the overall federated model – identifying signal exclusion zones to avoid signal sighting clashes in design phase. - Review and assessment of initial feasibility reports.
- Attendance and Input to Signal Sighting and Driveability workshops.
Results & Impact
Through our close collaboration and technical rigour, Mosaic Rail helped ensure that Amey’s signalling deliverables were completed on time, compliant, and ready for construction.
